Reopening Plan (Version 4.0) & Other Important Information
Posted on 07/27/2020

Dear RSD6 Community,

I am pleased to share the most recent version of the School Reopening Plan for the Litchfield Public Schools and Regional School District No 6.  You can find Version 4.0 (dated July 23rd) HERE.

This update to the plan includes:

·      Outdoor Classrooms / Learning Space

·      Cleaning Facilities (Adding Logs)

·      Ventilation (Fans to Circulate Air)

·      Monitoring Air Quality / Temps

·      Fire / Safety Drills

·      After School (Virtual Components)

I know that many questions are still lingering and we will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.  In the interim, here are a few important items (some as a reminder) as we move into August.

First Day of School / School Calendar

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 26, 2020.  The first three days will also be half-days as we work with our students and learn all the new protocols for reopening school.

You can find the revised school calendar HERE.

Are We Opening in Person? Hybrid? Remote?

This is the big question that still needs clarification from the State of Connecticut, the Connecticut Department of Education, and the Department of Public Health.

Districts were told in June by the CSDE to plan to have our students and staff back in school for the first day.   Should cases rise in our state, then we will follow that guidance and move to Phase 2 (Hybrid Model).  Should we be forced to close facilities, then we will move to Phase 3 (Remote Learning).

Please know that guidance is routinely updated and any change of data could alter parts of the reopening plan. Any change will be communicated to the community using all of our resources (text, email, website, and SchoolMessenger).

Masks / Face Coverings

The requirements from the CSDE include that students and staff must wear face coverings (mask, face covering, or face shield) when on a school bus or in a school building.

Transportation Waiver

We continue to work on bus routing for the 2020-2021 school year. We ask again that if your child is not going to ride the bus, that you consider completing a Transportation Waiver for the first half of the year.  A printable copy of the waiver can be found HERE. You may email your completed waiver to

Home Instruction

As we program for the coming year, we know that some students cannot, or will choose not, to physically return in August.  Should this be your case, we are requesting assistance in providing timely notification as follows:

Homebound (Medical)

If your student has a medical reason and will not be returning to school please send this information (inclusive of a note from a doctor) to the Office of Student Services at

Homebound (Choice – Not Medical)

If your child will not be returning to school in the fall and requires home instruction, please send this information to the main office of the student’s school.

School Protocol and Procedures

The schools are finalizing their class lists along with protocols and procedures for the coming year. As each building is unique, this information will be sent from schools directly to families on August 3rd

Thank you again to our entire community for the continued work behind reopening.  While recent COVID-19 case data has been positive, we must all stay mindful of public health and safety to make reopening as strong as possible.

Stay healthy.  Stay strong.  Keep living forward.
