Q and A

August 30, 2019

Dear RSD6 Community,

Earlier this week, there was an announcement about a public hearing to be held on Tuesday, September 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at WAMOGO.

You can find the announcement here:

Public Hearing Announcement

This announcement has brought forward some speculation and general questions. It is my hope that this email will help clarify.

Q: What workgroup recommendations?

In April, the Board of Education was presented with a series of recommendations from the Work Group on Enrollment and School Design.

That presentation can be found here:

School Design Work Group Recommendations – April 22, 2019

One recommendation on middle school configuration requires an amendment to the education plan for the district.

Q: What is the district “Education Plan?” Is it the same as the “Charter?”

Yes, originally started in 1953 and revised in 1970, the “Education Plan” for Regional School District No 6. is equivalent to the “Charter”

Q: Is there a vote at the public hearing?

No, there is not a vote at the public hearing. This meeting is an opportunity to once again hear the recommendations and get clarification.

Q: If they open the Charter (or Education Plan) is it true they can close a school?

No, there is a process for amendment to a district education plan. This hearing is about a specific question being raised on changing one grade level in our planned elementary configuration. There is not a discussion or recommendation to close a school.

Q: What is the process after the public hearing?

After the hearing, the Board of Education meets on Monday, September 16th.   At that meeting, it will be determined if the question moves forward to a referendum on November 5th.  According to state legislation, each town must independently approve a question for it to pass.

Q: Based on the timing, is it possible for any recommendations to go into effect for 2020-2021 or is it more realistic for 2021-2022?

Based on the current timing and our current projects, it is more realistic to go into effect for 2021-2022.

As always, keep the questions coming.

After an amazing start to the year, my best wishes to everyone for a great long weekend.

Chris
