Dear Parents/Guardians,

Due to the recent cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), we are making some adjustments to our plan for outdoor extracurricular activities.  While there has not been a large volume of reported cases in Connecticut, we are acting out of an abundance of caution due to the severity of the disease.

The goal is to have students finished with practices and games prior to the peak time when mosquito activity occurs.  We have moved the boys soccer game against Gilbert from 7:00 pm start to 3:45pm.  Additionally, coaches have been informed that all outdoor practices will need to be completed by 5:30pm.  The Berkshire League athletic directors have been collaborating extensively on this effort and are in alignment with this approach.  We will make adjustments to this plan once we have had our first hard frost or we receive further information from our State or local Health Departments.

Below is a link to a fact sheet on EEE that you may find helpful.  There is also a message from the State of Connecticut – Department of Public Health for your reference.  The safety of our students remains our top priority and we greatly appreciate your understanding and support.

Sincerely,

Sabin Loveland, Principal

EEE Fact Sheet

From the State of Connecticut – Department of Public Health:

“The mosquitoes that carry the virus are active until the first heavy frost.  Health officials advise against unnecessary trips into mosquito breeding grounds, such as freshwater swamps.  Overnight camping trips or other outdoor exposure in freshwater swamps – particularly at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes carrying the virus are most active – should be avoided as well. “
