Dear Region 6 Community,

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I share the news on the untimely passing of WAMOGO teacher Mr. Mark Yanaway.

Mark, a Litchfield resident, was a Social Studies teacher at WAMOGO for 14 years and Vice President of the WAMOGO Educators Association.  He was active in the community with the Boy Scouts of America, American Legion, and St. Michael’s Church. Mark was a highly decorated retired Colonel in the United States Army reserve who did two tours in Iraq and traveled to over 20 countries.

This sudden and tragic news will impact the school community in many ways. There are students who have lost a teacher and staff members who have lost a colleague and friend.  In support of our school community, the district mental health team met today and starting on Monday morning, WAMOGO will have grief counselors available during the week to support students and staff as needed.

On a personal level, Mark was one of the first staff members to help in my transition to the district. As Social Studies teachers, we shared a passion for history and international events. Most of all, he was a fellow educator who became a confidant and was always there to share ideas and provide honest feedback.  He will be deeply missed.

Should any students, parents, community members, staff or alumni need any support during this time of grief and healing, the following are district contacts:

Christopher Leone, Superintendent,

Sabin Loveland, Principal

Charlie Rowland

Deb Foley, Director of Student Services

Audrey Spielman, Director of Guidance at WAMOGO

860.567.6646, ext. 171

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark's family as well as the many within our community impacted by this tragic loss.
