Dear RSD6 Community,

It has been a very busy stretch with ever-changing news and guidance. This letter is to help inform you of our current work and the next steps.  Although we are faced with adversity, in uncertain times, we are excited to provide opportunities for our students.

The school administrations of both districts are finalizing a plan to implement Distance Learning for all students. As a prolonged closure becomes our new working reality, our goal is to ensure new learning opportunities. This program comes with great collaboration and will go live to students on Monday, March 30, 2020. The program will remain in effect for the duration of the Governor’s Executive Order to close schools with the exception of spring break. In the coming days, you will receive updates on how the district will roll out this program.

Tonight, the Board of Education met and unanimously approved a request for a waiver of the 180-day school year.  My thanks to the Board, the district staff, and the union leadership that came together and made this possible. Most recent guidance from the Connecticut State Department of Education informed districts that we should focus on Distance Learning and we can end our year “at the regularly scheduled end date.”

I have attached a revised calendar that you will note has Distance Learning starting on March 30th and the last day of school as June 16, 2020.   We will keep you updated on postponed events, rescheduled events, and the future of spring sports.  Should any of these circumstances change, please know that you will be updated.

In closing, I would like to personally thank the staff and families in our community for the emails sent forward. The words of encouragement, suggestions, ideas, and amazing pictures of students doing work, all have given me strength through many long days. I said at the beginning of the year that we are stronger together in our communities and while I never imagined being tested in this manner – you, the community, are what make everything possible.

Stay healthy.

Chris
