Distance Learning

Distance Learning
Posted on 03/20/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In early March, our superintendent requested that our teachers, administrators, and district staff prepare activities to engage students in our curricula in the event of a short-term, two-week school closure. As of March 16, however, Governor Lamont’s declaration to close Connecticut's schools required that we change our plan and challenged our districts to provide students with long-term learning opportunities that would extend through March 31, and perhaps even further.

The current material your children have been provided will serve as a foundation for a now extended “distance learning” program that has been carefully crafted by curriculum leaders and teachers in our district. This program cannot supplant the quality experience for a learner who is in a classroom with peers and an instructor. Please understand that we are using every resource available to ensure it does throughout the duration of this state-mandated school closure.

By March 30, our teachers will have participated in over twelve hours of professional development and will have been provided planning time to adjust their instruction in order to provide their students with virtual lessons that are standards-driven, relevant, and rigorous. These lessons will be ongoing, will provide immediate feedback, and will be focused on student development within a virtual environment. We are confident that, when implemented with fidelity, these academic experiences will engage all of our students as we move forward during an extended school closure.

More information on how to engage in these activities and, for secondary students, how performance will be reflected in grades, will be forthcoming.

Our students are capable. Our teachers are effective. Our resources are plenty. Regardless of circumstance, our districts, for these reasons, will remain strong.

Be well and stay healthy.
