Blue Red Puzzle Pieces

Dear RSD6 Community,

I have thought about all the emotion surrounding COVID-19 and the past week.  This evolving situation has brought on understandable feelings of being scared, of the unknown, or disappointed in cancellations.  I think we all have felt this way over recent days.

In thinking of things I wanted to share in this letter, the word “perspective” came to mind often.  I learned a love for history and sports from my father who was born in 1923.  I grew up on stories of my father’s youth that included a stock market crash of 1929, sports, the Yankees, and World War II.  In reflecting upon the events of this week, it gave perspective to what we are witnessing on a daily basis.

We have seen some of the most significant financial moments in a century.  We have watched pro sports leagues (MLB, NBA, and NHL) all postpone seasons in a matter of hours.  We will not see March Madness this year.  And, we even saw a college tournament game canceled at halftime in New York.  There is not a comparison to what is happening.

During this week, during the most challenging moments, we also witnessed a great accomplishment.  The educators of Litchfield and Region 6 worked to roll out hundreds of learning opportunities for our students.  This unprecedented work took collaboration to another level.

There are many questions left to address.  How long will we be out of school?  What will happen to the school calendar?  Will we have school during spring break?  Is graduation day still set?  Much is still evolving.

There has been much speculation about the Governor’s executive order reducing the 180-day school year.  The order does provide some clarity to the number of school days, but requires a district to be in school until June 30th.  I am awaiting some final guidance from the Connecticut State Department of Education and will clarify calendar plans, as possible, in the coming week.

In closing, I want to wish everyone and your family, health and peace over the coming weekend.

Chris
