HARDWARE PROBLEMS

A computer will not turn on

  • First thing to do is check the back of the computer. Usually the power cord is unplugged or the power switch is turned off.
  • If the monitor appears to be turned on, then try switching the power cables from the monitor to the computer.

*If this works; submit an IT request to obtain a new power cord.

  • If the monitor does not appear to be working either, check the other end of each of their power cords and make sure they are either plugged into the wall or power strip properly.  If applicable, check the power strip's cord and power switch as well.

*If the computer still does not turn on, please submit an IT request.

A computer’s light is red and it beeps three times

  • When a computer does this, it means that the computer is overheating. The inside of the computer may need to be cleaned out or the fan replaced. Please submit an IT request.

A computer cannot see the network tree
(for a troubleshooting video, click the play button below)

  • If a computer cannot see the network tree; this most commonly is a problem with the network cable.
  • Check the connection in the back of the computer and the wall.
  • If the cable is plugged in, try switching it with another computer’s cable if available. You can tell if the computer gets a connection by the lights located near the network port.

*If the latter step works, please submit an IT request to obtain a new network cable.

**If the replacement of the network cable does not work, submit an IT request.

The computer will turn on but the monitor is blank

  • Check the back of the computer and the monitor to see if the VGA cable is properly plugged in.
  • Check the power cord leading to the back of the monitor to see if it is plugged in.
  • If you can see the desktop or login screen on the SMART Board but not the monitor; check the power for the VGA splitter box to make sure it is plugged in and is on.  Check all the VGA cables to make sure they are all tightly secured here as well.

*If the monitor is still not working, please submit an IT request.

Computer virus

  • If a computer says it is infected, start by shutting down and restarting the computer.

*If this does not appear to fix the virus; turn off your computer immediately and submit an IT request.

Printer paper jam
(for a troubleshooting video, click the play button below)

  • Paper jams are fairly simple to fix. All you have to do is find the source of the jam and remove it.
  • The most common spots to find a paper jam are in the paper tray, right under the ink cartridge. (Or) if the printer has a manual feed or printing tray which folds down, this is another place to look.

*If you can't locate or remove your paper jam, please submit an IT request.

Printer will not print

  • First thing to do is check your printer for paper jams and follow the steps above, if needed.
  • If a paper jam does not exist, check the printer selection box (which opens after clicking print in whatever application you are trying to print from).  Make sure you have the correct printer chosen, and not printing somewhere else accidentally.
  • Check the network cable to make sure it is plugged into the back of the printer and wall.

*Note some printers are not network printers and are connected directly to the computer. In this case, check the cable to make sure it is plugged in properly.

**After following the steps above, if you still cannot print submit an IT request.

SMART Board orientation

  • To orient a SMART Board you need to press the keyboard and mouse button on the marker tray at the same time.
  • An orientation screen will appear, continue to tap the center of the target with either your finger or marker.

SMART Document Camera not working

  • Check the USB cord that connects the camera to the computer.
  • If you see the desktop or login screen on the SMART Board and/or the monitor (but no image appears from the document camera); check the power to make sure it is plugged in.  Check all the VGA cables to make sure they are all tightly secured as well.
  • SMART Notebook software is also known to have an issue with document cameras when you have multiple files open at once, and try to access the camera at the same time.  Close all Notebook files and re-launch a single instance of the application (try accessing the camera after that).

*If your document camera still does not work after all this please submit an IT request.

SMART Board has a red light

  • Check all the USB connections leading from the computer to the SMART Board.
  • Try hitting the reset button on the right-hand side of the board toward the bottom.

*If the SMART Board is still experiencing issue(s), submit an IT request.

SMART Board marker lights out

  • Check and make sure the gray cable under the marker tray is plugged in.
  • If one/or more of the markers will not work; while others do (the pen tray may need to be replaced).  Submit an IT request.

Projector won’t turn on

  • First check to make sure the projector is plugged in.
  • If the projector appears to get power but the lamp and/or temp light is red; proceed to the next step.

Projector lamp and temp lights are red

  • This usually indicates that the projector is overheating.  Unplug the projector and leave unplugged for approximately 20 minutes.
  • At this time, you can plug the projector back in and attempt to turn on once again.  If the projector still does not turn on, please submit an IT request.

Projector is projecting spots or flashing color

*This is a mechanical issue, and usually requires a replacement projector.  Submit an IT request immediately (note: this can take up to several days).
