Special Education Philosophy

We believe that all students can learn, live and achieve within the Region 6 community. Each student possesses unique gifts and talents which are fostered through the assistance offered by the special services department. All children have the potential to be learners no matter what their exceptionality and possess and develop numerous strengths in their journey through the educational process. We believe that education is something that all children should be afforded no matter what their families income level or their ability. The purpose of Special Education/Section 504 is to provide an equal opportunity so that all students can access the curriculum. This may require specialized instruction provided by a special education teacher or it may involve some minor accommodations such as preferential seating or extended time. To the fullest extent possible the special educators in Region 6 educate their students with their peers in the least restrictive environment.

Special educators collaborate and work closely with parents, regular education staff, and support staff to develop appropriate programs for students requiring special services. The ultimate goal of special education is to improve students’ ability to advocate for themselves and learn compensatory skills necessary for post secondary education and employment. Special educators are cognizant of the importance of planning for what life after high school will look like. Finally, students being exited from special education services are celebrated for this accomplishment. We as educators strive to provide quality student programming, academic growth, and pride in our schools and community. Special educators work to improve their students’ academic progress so that they are progressing at a reasonable pace based on the student's achievement goals to meet their annual learning goals.
