Region 6 Community,

This letter is to inform you of a dispute between the Thomaston School District and the Region 6 School District, which will be reported on in the Republican-American.

On August 30, 2017, the Thomaston Board of Education filed suit against the Region 6 Board of Education, Charles Rowland and me involving a dispute concerning the enrollment of students from Thomaston into the Agricultural and Science Technology Education Program (ASTEP) at WAMOGO. Working with counsel, we are seeking to resolve this dispute and reach an agreement concerning the enrollment of Thomaston students in our ASTEP.

At the core of the dispute between our two school districts is the ensuring that students have an option to participate in specialized programs that are not available to them in their home school district. Region 6 also confronts this when our families and students seek to enroll in another program, such as a magnet or charter school. We support our families in this endeavor and, during my tenure at Region 6, we had children attend programs from Waterbury to Hartford to Torrington. This is a choice that I have made for my own child and is a school choice that I feel should be provided to other families as well.

I am mindful of the five students met in the Ag-Sci animal room during the first-day tour of WAMOGO. Four of these five students were from other communities and were fulfilling their desire to have an opportunity to work with animals that were not available to them in their hometown schools. This brief and indelible snapshot reflects both the spirit and opportunities provided by our school district and other schools of choice. We are working diligently to ensure that these opportunities are available for future students.

I will keep the school community updated as to the status of this matter. In the interim, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly at 860.567.7400 or via email at
