Dear RSD6 Community,

I am pleased to share the School Reopening Plan for the Litchfield Public Schools and Regional School District No 6.   While creating this plan has been a difficult challenge, please know the safety of students, staff, and community has been given, and will remain, the highest priority throughout the coming year.

A copy of the plan can be found here.

Here are a few important items as we move from planning into implementation.

How likely is this plan to change?

This has been a common question and one that does not have an exact answer or science.

Currently, we are expecting to have our students back in school for the first day on August 26th.   Should cases rise in our state, then we will follow guidance and move to Phase 2 (Hybrid Model).  Should we be forced to close facilities, then we will move to Phase 3 (Remote Learning).

Know that guidance is routinely updated from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Department of Public Health (DPH), the State of Connecticut, and the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE).  Any change of guidance could alter parts of the plan.

Please know that we will provide timely communication to everyone, should guidance or parts of the plan change. A change will be communicated to the community using all of our resources (text, email, website, and SchoolMessenger).

Masks / Face Coverings

The requirements from the CSDE include that students and staff must wear face coverings (mask or face shield) when on a school bus or in a school building.  Should a student or staff member have a medical exemption from wearing a face covering, please send a note from the doctor to the main office of your student’s school.

Transportation Waiver

We continue to work on bus routing for the 2020-2021 school year. We are working hard to lower capacity and ask that if your child is not going to ride the bus, that you once again consider completing a Transportation Waiver for the first half of the year.  A printable copy of the waiver can be found here.  You may email your completed waiver to TransportationWaiver@rsd6.org.

Home Instruction / Home School

As we continue to program for the coming year, we know that some students cannot, or will choose not to physically return in August.  Should this be your case, we are requesting assistance in providing timely notification as follows:

Homebound (Medical)

If your student has a medical reason and will not be returning to school please send this information (inclusive of a note from a doctor) to the Office of Student Services at dfoley@rsd6.org.

Homebound (Choice – Not Medical)

If your child will not be returning to school in the fall and requires home instruction, please send this information to the main office of the student’s school.

School Protocol and Procedures

The schools are finalizing their class lists along with protocols and procedures for the coming year. As each building is unique, this information will be sent from schools directly to families in early August.

Additional forums will also be provided in mid-August and continue into the new school year.

The last several weeks have seen countless hours poured into the reopening document.  Some of those recent hours have been late at night with the return of major league baseball playing out on the television in the background.  Yes, the players are returning to the field of play, but the ballparks will remain empty.  It is different – much like reopening schools.  We need to make the most of our new world.  We will adapt.  We will stay safe.  And, we will continue to work hard for the children of our community.

Thank you again to everyone for the continued work behind reopening.  It is going to take everyone being mindful of public health and safety to make reopening as strong as possible.

Stay healthy.  Stay strong.  Keep living forward.

Chris
