April 17, 2020

Dear RSD6 Community,

On Monday, we will begin a new week of Facilitated Distance Learning.  I thank over 290 students and parents who responded to the feedback survey.  The information you provided helped the administration make important changes to meet the needs of our community.

I apologize for the longer email in advance as the following is provided to update everyone on our current and future work:

Length of Closure

At this time, the Governor has ordered that all schools be closed until at least May 20th. There has not been a decision issued for the balance of the year, but we continue to plan for many different announcements.  When more information is made public, we will share accordingly.

End of Year Events – Promotion Ceremonies - Graduation

In the coming week, you will begin to receive more notice from your school about previously scheduled events for May.  Each school is working with vendors on trying to postpone events instead of cancellation.  However, in some circumstances, postponement is not possible.  I thank you for all understanding that nothing is ideal during this time.

Currently, there has not been any change made to Promotion Ceremonies or Graduation. These events are still scheduled on the calendar as originally planned.  Should the school closure be extended through the end of the year, then we will update you on alternative plans.

Facilitated Distance Learning Changes

Effective Monday April 20th, we are making some modifications to the FDL schedule and instruction model.

Schedule Change

On Wednesday, distance learning will end at Noon. This adjustment is being made for three reasons: 1) Reduction of screen time (a common theme for students and parents); 2) Provide a guaranteed time for live teacher access; and 3) Allow teacher collaboration across grade level, schools and with special education services.

Instructional Modification

On Wednesday, teachers at the secondary level will have live access time during students given class period.  At the elementary level, teachers will utilize this time for continuation of STEM or Humanities lessons, individualize instruction, small groups, enrichment or project work.

Additionally, teachers have been encouraged to provide students with more project based learning opportunities, enrichment and extra credit work.

We believe that these adjustments will further assist our students and families in the adjustment to distance learning.

A New Enrichment Opportunity (Grades 2-6)

I am pleased to share that we have partnered with Litchfield Tang Soo Do to provide a Martial Arts Character Enrichment Program for our students in grades 2-6.  This is an exciting chance for our students to work on character building and also some physical fitness while away from school.  The program, for students in grades 2-6, will start on April 20th and run from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following schedule for the length of the closure:

Monday: GCS

Tuesday: Warren

Wednesday: LIS

Thursday: LCS

Friday: JMS

Sign-up information will be forthcoming from each school.

More Enrichment Coming

Please stay on the lookout for further enrichment opportunities in the coming week.  We are finalizing an Art/Design Contest and also Online Homework Help.

Community Connections

I have heard from many (students, staff, and parents) that you are missing school.  I completely agree and fully understand the impact of limited day-to-day human interaction. I miss the joy found in visiting a classroom or holding a school community meeting. Therefore, I am making two necessary changes to my schedule:

Superintendent Lunches

Each day, I have reserved Noon to 12:30 p.m. to have a virtual lunch with students from different schools.  I want to know how this experience is going for the students and I know they will have many great ideas to share or questions to ask.  Further information on how to participate will be forthcoming from building Principals.

Community Conversations

Starting on April 22nd, I will be live every Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for parents and community members to get an update, ask questions or just talk about education.  There is much going on in our world – positive, negative and misinformation. My hope is to have discussions about any and all education topics concerning our community.  You can access this weekly conversation at this link found here.

In closing, I don’t think anyone envisioned this scenario for the world.  It has been a long five weeks and we have more time to pass; but remember, we will be back together again and we will be stronger.

Stay healthy.  Stay strong.  Live forward.
