Dear Community Members,

The world and news around COVID-19 (Coronavirus) continues to change. This letter is provided as an update to precautionary measures that are needed to follow guidelines.

Today Governor Ned Lamont declared a “public health emergency" and the state saw its first school district closure. What is most evident is that this virus, and the news, evolves very quickly. Many questions and answers are developing in real time. It is clear that we will all need to be flexible with respect to the coming days and weeks.

Events / Gatherings

Based on the guidelines provided from the State of Connecticut all district events with over 100 external participants will be postponed, or canceled, through at least March 20th

The most immediate impact is on tickets for the LPS Players performances of Guys and Dolls (scheduled for Thursday through Saturday). We wish to give these amazing student-artists an opportunity to perform for the community and Litchfield High School is finalizing a plan to provide, limited tickets to families, and complementary video access to a taped performance. More details will be forthcoming from the school.

With respect to other events, schools will work to reschedule other events as circumstances permit.

Field Trips

Each trip for the balance of the year is currently being reviewed. We have faced numerous external cancellations by vendors in the last 24 hours.  At this time, all field trips scheduled through March 20th,  are postponed to be rescheduled as possible. More information will be forthcoming from schools as available. We will continue to monitor field trips on a case-by-case as the situation evolves. We will follow guidance from the CDC, DPH, CSDE, Area Health Agencies, and the State of Connecticut, when making any decisions.

CIAC Announcement

In a historic announcement, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) today canceled the remainder of the 2020 postseason tournaments. With countless student-athletes across our communities still looking forward to games, please take the time to remind our students that we are proud of their accomplishments.

Potential School Closures / Make-Up Days

While closure is not currently anticipated, it could become a reality. Should the district need to close, it may be prolonged. If this becomes a reality we will make-up days as possible during spring break and at the end of the year. Our goal remains to have 180-days of instruction by June 30, 2020.

Remote Learning Opportunities

Thanks to our community involvement we have a sound understanding of home internet connectivity. We are finalizing work for our students to complete at home should we need to close schools. If needed, the goal of this work is not to replace instructional days but to allow our students, and families, the opportunity to remain actively engaged in learning.

School Cleaning

Every day our facilities and maintenance staff are utilizing disinfectant in our schools. We are following the revised guidelines with cleaning products per DAS guidance.

I have spoken directly with All-Star Transportation and buses are being disinfected every day. We will continue this practice moving forward.

The Unknown?

There is plenty we could fit into this category. We are at a unique time in the history of our state, the nation, and the world. I will continue to keep everyone updated as circumstances change.
